Clooney Toons

Ok, ok, so I admit; I am part of the problem. I dedicate precious time and space and effort to such a worthless topic. I am, probably, part of the reason George Clooney (or, as Sean Hannity has determined, Looney), Tim Robbins, Susan Sarandon, Mike Moore, and dozens of other overpaid and possibly just stiflingly bored celebrities talk about politics. So this is not without a little indictment on myself.

But let’s get real here. George Clooney made headlines when he supposedly posted on the Huffington Post blog an angry rant against Dems who insist that the Bush administration “deceived” them about Iraq-Al Quadea terror ties. This was, admittedly, a little refreshing. Not Clooney’s bloated leftist agenda, but a little honesty from the left about the stupidity of claiming deception in the face of pro-war Democratic comments and votes. Clooney apparently saw the predicament caused by the alleged chicanery: either the left is incredibly dishonest or incredibly dumb.

But, then, true to form, a liberal flip-flopped and claimed he didn’t actually write the blog. So the Democrat gods were appeased, and the criticism was rescinded. Too bad.

But celebs with big pockets and even bigger mouths never were impressive in the arena of ideas. Consider some rather absurd examples:

  • Kanye West says “George Bush hates black people,” even though the Bush has one of the highest numbers of hired African-Americans of any administration.
  • Cameron Diaz tells Oprah that if women “want rape to be made legal,” they shouldn’t vote in the 2004 election.
  • Tim Robbins and Susan Sarandon. Enough said.
  • Green Day’s salute to uneducated liberalism in “American Idiot.”
  • The Dixie Chicks “move” to the rock music community after being booed and snubbed in Country after bashing Bush.
  • Tim McGraw and Faith Hill are apparently looking to become rappers after jeering Bush over Katrina relief, even though neither has any political or governmental experience.

Does it get much more pathetic than this?

The clincher is that not one of these wailers has offered any good plan for homeland security, disaster preparation and relief, moral values and state’s rights, foreign policy, or anything. It is as if Hayden Christensen should criticize a performance by Tom Hanks. There is simply no ground to on which to balance your soapbox.

Of course, the American people know this. The rich and the famous have little connection with reality. That’s why they get to be rich and famous. So when they pretend that they do, it is really a rather funny sight.
