I still believe that the world is ripe for a third world war. Some disagree and say that we will probably never have another one. I’m not so sure. Oil supplies are crucial as far as governments go. Some people in high places have certain (bad) principles that they refuse to turn from. This is going to lead to a third world war at some point in the future. Whether it comes about as a result of our current situation I do not know, but it is looking likely to me.
The past five years or so we have seen Russia grow in strength under Putin and his successor. The Russians could never take on the United States directly, nor do I think they want to, but they will become a major player in this next war (if current events lead to it).
The Chinese will also become a player. For what part, I am not sure, but if a third major war were to begin to break out, I have little doubt that the Chinese government would see its perfect chance to invade Taiwan. The United States and the global community has been against China taking over Taiwan for decades, but a third world war would easily set the stage for an invasion. The US would be unable to respond if we are involved in the Middle East, and the Russians could probably care less either way. The European Union would not do anything about it, I am sure.
This third war would have to break out as a result of three geographical areas instigating violence all in a short period of time. First, any American or Israeli attacks on Iran will probably instigate sucidide bombings, some missiles going off, and other attacks against Western societies. The Iranians know that at some point, be it during the Bush administration or after, that they will be attacked. If the United States refuses to attack, then Israel will in the not too distant future. This will warrant response from Muslims and from the Iranian government, which I have little doubt has already made some preparations to retaliate. I suspect this will be the catalyst to it all.
The second major geographical area is Israel and its immediate neighbors, particuarly Syria and Lebanon (and perhaps the Palestinian areas). Any sort of attack that might set the Israelis off like in 2006 when they invaded Lebanon would result in another invasion, but since the attack on Iran will take the pressure off, they will probably not retreat so quickly. News reporting on Iran and what happened there will allow Israel to move about more freely in their military maneuvers without the whole world paying attention, like in 2006. I believe an incident involving Israel and a neighbor will probably spur the Arab nations to fight since an attack against Iran alone won’t be enough.
Lastly is Russia, the Slavs, and the Serbs. The Polish and Czech governments are bowing to US demands to put a missile shield in those two respective countries. What for, though, I can’t imagine. The Iranians would be idiots to try to attack Europe, their best bet would be Israel (and strategically better for them). I personally can’t see Iran shooting missiles at anyone unless they are attacked first, though. The Russians, on the other hand, view the missile shield as a threat, and rightly so. If China were to build a missile shield in Chile to prevent them from being attacked by Venezuelan missiles, would we not see that as a threat and demand China remove their silos? Obviously. Russia sees this as a threat and I think for once their threat to use military action in response is going to be proven.
The rest of the London Times article is filled with other reasons to be angry that we have seen building up over many years. Ever since the US started meddling in the affairs of the south-eastern European nations, Russia has seen that as a threat and has gotten quite angry over it. Trying to force Russia’s neighbors into NATO and the EU, as well as supporting new governments (like Kosovo) is simply heating up the pot that we have put the Russians in. They won’t instigate military action here unless the other events I mentioned (Iran attack and Israeli invasions) were to occur first.
The time is ripe for World War III. If we manage to avoid a third one the world will be better off for it, but I cannot see it happening forever.

I really wonder if we are approaching the end of the earth. It’s frightening to think about the possibility of World War III. I do hope all the political leaders come to their senses because I’m still very young and I’m looking forward to enjoying my life ahead.

There are a couple of facts that humans should try to get their minds around. If such consciousness were to occur on a grand scale, many of our global tensions would go away.
1 – There is only one thing that is needed to ensure our access to oil. It’s called “money”. If we don’t buy it, it’s just so much stinky black muck in the ground.
Remember Chavez’s recent bellicose threats to cut off US supplies of Venezuelan crude? A few days later, he much more quietly reversed himself. Only Venezuelan insiders know for certain, but I could imagine the conservation between Hugo and his Oil Minister “Uh, Hugo, the only places where our crappy, high-asphaltene, high-sulfur, high-naphthenic crude can be processed effectively are the refineries on the US Gulf Coast. If we sell it anywhere else, we’ll get a much lower price for it.”

2 – When a country reaches a certain geographic size, it becomes effectively invasion-proof. China, the US, and Russia (graphically demonstrated by both Napoleon and Hitler) all fall into this category. Canada, Brazil, Mexico, India and Australia are candidates as well. After a certain size, there is no way you control a region without some degree of buy-in from the populace.
Think of the hapless army that would have the misfortune to topple the US government. We live in a country where there are 9 guns for every 10 citizens. (Can you say “insurgency”? Sure, I knew you could.) Do you have any idea how many Ted Kaczynskis and Tim McVeighs would be turning this country into a living Hell for the “conquering” army.
As the Germans and Japanese have demonstrated, the only way to truly win a war against the US is to lose it.
If a critical mass of people on Earth could accomodate their minds to these two very simple facts, we wouldn’t have to worry about global conflict any time soon.
Then we could go about defusing the Israel problem, which is just as simple as holding Israel to the standards of civilized nations and no longer treating them as The Fair Haired Boy Who Can Do No Wrong. Yes, the Holocaust happened and it was awful (thanks for that, President Wilson). But that can’t be the universal Get Out of Jail Free card for Israel. It can’t be used to justify the Palestinian Holocaust that AIPAC and some Israeli hardliners advocate.
And while I agree that the creation of a Jewish homeland may have been an appropriate response at the end of WWII, I often wonder why we didn’t just give them Bavaria instead, throw in good-sized chunks of western Austria and northern Italy for good measure. I’ve seen the pictures, very few of the concentration camp guards looked Palestinian to me. How about if the nations that were party to the crimes pay for them? (Sorry, I know that’s just crazy talk.)
Unfortunately, there are a lot of people who make a handsome living either supplying the participants of proxy wars or “protecting” nations from the threat of war. (Some defense contractor is going to make a healthy profit on the “missle shield” in Poland & the Czech Republic, as that project simultaneously and paradoxically makes us less safe.) Those same people spend a lot of money on very effective PR intended to obfuscate the real issues.

somebody said the war will start in Pakistan, India and N. Korea but I will say Pak and India will not at all be involved in the WW-III. It will start with N. Korea being mainly responsible and waging a war on S. Korea for no reason. China and Russia will support N. Korea for some reason and US, Japan, Germany and UN will fight together against them. S. America, most of Europe and South Asia will be out of this. Middle east may top this up with their own conflicts and individual wars.
N. Korea will b the first to use nuclear weapons and S. Korea will b the first victim I guess. we wont have to wait long as this all will start soon in a year or two.

heres the thing even tho U.S.A money is in the shiter it is not a beatable country on any scale. Jeremey has the best idea of what a WW3 may be and how were going to get to it.
1.) No major nations would use nuclear weapons. The destruction they unleash outweighs any justification. North Korea against South Korea or Iran against Israel may happen, but these nations don’t possess the arsenals for a total nuclear holocaust.
2.) The only major power that opposes the US today is Russia, and even still not that much. Russia and USA would most likely oppose each other in WW3.
3.) People write scenarios about a Chinese-USA war. This is unrealistic- it would be economically devastating for both sides, and probably end up as a stalemate because both countries can’t invade each other.
4.) 2012 is a media scam.
5.) don’t forget, coming back to oil, that Russia and China don’t like each other as well. China may go to war with Russia over Russian oilfields, because Chinese oil is nearly deplteted. I think this will be a key factor of WW3.
6.) A Chinese-American alliance would greatly benefit both sides.
So, now you know what I think a World War III may be about. Oil will be the big cause, and it will be triggered by an outbreak in the Middle East, Korea, or Pakistan/India. Total nuclear war is unrealistic, and so is a war between America and China, or America and Europe.
